Short-term and regular respite cover — planned or occasional, so family carers can rest properly.

Talk to us about arranging a break

What is respite care?

Respite care is short-term in-home care that gives family carers a genuine break. A trained carer comes to the home and takes over for a few hours, a full day, overnight, or longer — so the usual carer can rest, keep appointments, or simply have time to themselves.

It happens in the person's own home, which means no unsettling move to an unfamiliar environment. The person being cared for keeps their routine, their surroundings, and their sense of safety — just with a different face keeping them company.

Respite can be booked on a regular weekly basis, arranged months ahead for a planned holiday, or called upon unexpectedly when something disrupts the usual care arrangement. There is no single right way to use it.

We work with families across Noosa and the Sunshine Coast. Our carers are local, experienced, and trained to step into someone's home and follow the routines already in place rather than imposing their own. Respite is often arranged alongside personal care and dementia care.

Caring for a partner or parent is relentless in a way that is hard to convey to people who have not done it. It does not finish at five o'clock, and the tiredness that comes with it is not the kind that a good night's sleep fixes. Respite exists because carers need proper breaks to keep going.

A common hesitation we hear is that accepting outside help somehow signals failure. The reality is the opposite — carer exhaustion is one of the main reasons people end up moving into residential care sooner than they otherwise would have needed to. Taking a break is not selfish; it is sustainable.

We match each person with a carer who fits their personality and routine. For planned respite, we introduce the carer beforehand so the person knows who is coming. For unexpected situations, we do our best to organise cover at short notice.

The practical details matter. We follow the person's existing routine rather than imposing our own. If morning tea happens at ten and the paper gets read in the garden at eleven, that is what happens when we are there too. Familiarity reduces anxiety for everyone.

We work with families who use respite as a reliable weekly appointment and with those who call on us only when something unexpected arises. Both are completely normal, and we will always be straightforward about what we can deliver.

Planned Breaks

Book regular respite ahead of time so you can plan your week, attend appointments, or simply rest without worry.

Short-Notice Cover

When something disrupts the usual arrangement, we do our best to send a carer quickly — often the same day.

Overnight and Weekend

Respite is not limited to business hours. We provide overnight and weekend cover when that is what your family needs.

Familiar Routines

Our carers follow the household's existing rhythms around meals, activities, and rest — not a template.

We work across Noosa and the Sunshine Coast, including the hinterland areas. Because our carers live locally, short-notice respite is more achievable, and visits are practical rather than becoming a long trip for the carer. If you are just outside our current area, get in touch and we will tell you honestly whether we can help. Respite is usually funded through Support at Home, or arranged privately.

Common Questions

How often can I use respite care?

There is no set limit. Some families book a regular weekly half-day, others call on us only when something unexpected happens. We work around what suits you.

Can respite be provided overnight?

Yes. We offer overnight and weekend respite for families who need extended breaks or who care for someone through the night.

Will the carer follow my parent's routine?

That is exactly what we ask you to tell us — their routines, preferences, and any triggers to avoid. Our carers follow your guidance.

How much notice do you need?

For planned respite, the more notice the better — at least a week if possible. For emergencies, we do our best to respond on the same day. And because we onboard signed clients within 24 hours, we don't hold up an urgent break on paperwork.

Can I meet the carer before respite starts?

Yes, and we encourage it. A brief introduction beforehand helps everyone feel more comfortable on the day.

Is respite care covered by government funding?

In many cases, yes. Support at Home and some Home Care Packages include respite as a funded service. We can explain what applies to your situation.
